Ed-vise: Affirmative Action

A sun in the eyes GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, drive into work today and the sun is in the eyes. Which means you can’t see the stop lights! I don’t think I ran any but, there was a flash from a traffic camera…we will see!

Free For All Friday Ed-vise today! Open Mat; PIZZA NIGHT!

Had to turn off the news last night. Not that I really watch too much TV news anymore.

The only thing they wanted to talk about was the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action.

In a nut shell…they got rid of it by a 6-3 vote.

For those that don’t know affirmative action allowed colleges to use race as a determining factor for getting into a college. From what I noticed, it really was only impacting the top tier universities. All the other ones didn’t really care who got in.

Now, the Republi-Morons and Trumpsters are all praising it as a great decision for equality. Saying things like “you shouldn’t get into college based on race, but on merit.”

Fine.

For me, I agree that getting into college based on how well you perform in high school SHOULD be the determining factor for getting into any college. IF…and that is a big IF…everyone has the same opportunity.

And that is the problem.

See, to this day, public schools with high minority populations have lacked the resources to make a level playing field to get their students into top tier colleges. Furthermore, many states are actively working to de-fund public schools in favor of private schools. And private schools are NOT cheap. Many private schools are “feeder schools” (prep schools) for top tier universities.

The top 10 prep schools for Ivy League Colleges are all private. The number one school has a $58,000 tuition bill PER YEAR. I don’t know many who can afford to send a kid to that.

Affirmative action was set up to give minority kids a shot at attending college. Historically you had some really smart kids being denied admission simply because of their skin color. Which led to historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).

So, where are we at now? Well, with affirmative action being taken off the books, colleges can decide how they want to set admission standards. They say they want a robust discussion and a diverse student body. Fine. Let’s see how they will do it now.

Will the universities truly support diversity or will merit prove that things really are not equal in Good Ol’ ‘Murica?

I’m just saying

That’s it for today. Be the person a stranger will do CPR on. Check in on each other and remember you teach cats to swim at the…KITTY POOL! BWAHAHAHAHHAHAA…MEOW!

Peace
