The “Conference of Champions” is NO MORE!
The Pac 12 (formerly Pac 10; formerly Pac 8; formerly Big 6; formerly Big 5; formerly Athletic Association of Western Universities; formerly Pacific Coast Conference) is, at this stage, no longer a conference per NCAA rules. NCAA requires 6 teams minimum to make up a conference.
So, between now and the football season of 2024, if the conference doesn’t land a couple schools, it’s gone.
Over 100 years of a conference gone, just like that.
Despite what anyone says about colleges and universities, they are NOT about academics. For the most part.
I can say that because one of the conferences that is the main driving force of pulling teams from the Pac 12 seems to have a real problem with basic math. They call themselves the Big 10. They currently have 14 schools. They have had 14 schools for a while now. Or at least more than 10. But, they never counted the other schools.
Many ask “How?”
And I will tell you my view from a fan of the conference.
The arrogance of the conference presidents and not paying attention to basic facts. Like SUPER basic facts. Like warnings that your house is on fire type basic facts. Like actually seeing your house on fire and simply ignoring that fact with the idea of “oh it will just go out.”
The former president put together a crappy network called the Pac 12 network. I watched it and it is straight up bad. From a fan’s point of view. The commentators during football were bad. Nobody really wanted to watch them nor can they remember them. Then, they had the teams playing at ungodly stupid hours of the day or night. By the time Pac 12 teams were playing, over half the nation was either in bed, passed out from the other games, or simply footballed out.
ESPN offered to buy the Pac 12 network and run the show. Why? Because that’s what they do and they needed to be more competitive with Fox. Former president said “Nope. We know what we are doing.” And, thus, the conference wasn’t getting the money to keep the biggest market which is LA (the center of the universe).
New president comes in and sits down inside the burning house.
Chooses to say things like “USC won’t leave. Their president told me they are loyal.” And “college isn’t just about football.”
Apparently she wasn’t loyal. Especially when nothing was offered up to thank USC for their loyalty. Second, despite what many want to believe, that college isn’t about football (or sports) think about this: how many TV channels are dedicated to actual academics and how many are dedicated to sports?
Or, how often do you access free lectures offered by every university versus highlight film of your favorite sporting event?
Sports bring a SHIT TON of money to the schools. We are talking in the BILLIONS depending on the school.
New president could have expanded the conference but the presidents of the universities were too proud to try and take schools from the mid-west. Well, now, several of those proud schools have joined the schools in the mid west.
In the end, it sucks to lose (more than likely) such a historical conference. But, the leaders of the conference (university presidents and presidents of the conference) have only themselves to blame. Arrogance, greed, and simply ignoring the burning house.
I’m just saying
That’s it for today. Be the person a stranger will do CPR on. Check in on each other and remember horses have low divorce rates because they have…STABLE RELATIONSHIPS! BWAHAHAHHHAHAHA…tear!
