Ed-vise: Earth Shakes

A holy shit! GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, HOLY SHIT is an understatement! Maui is literally ON FIRE! I mean like out of control type! Saw the headlines this morning. Just…WOW…is all I can say.

What Would You do Wednesday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s WEDNESDAY! And I do love WEDNESDAYS!

OK folks, if you did click the headlines to see the drone footage of the Maui fire, do so.

I’ve been to Maui once a long time ago. Hana to be specific. Steep mountains, plenty of rain forest or jungle (I can’t recall which it is).

Usually, in and around the Hawaiian Islands (Maui is part of that group) we think about lava. Why? Because they have active volcanoes and they were made by volcanoes.

But, rarely, if at all would we think of out of control brush/jungle fires. Well, that is what they have. The fire is being pushed by a hurricane that is in the area. Not bringing any rain to the island but bringing plenty of wind. And, NO, they don’t know how it started.

Here’s the thing though: based on how this is playing out and getting into the town of Lahaina, they probably don’t read Ed-vise. To bad. If they did, they might have did what’s called a “Table Top” exercise of a wildfire type scenario. Or, they might do something along the lines of a mass evacuation based on something.

I am willing to bet you they did something for a tsunami or a hurricane. Thing is, those scenarios have two very different ideas. A tsunami, I imagine, would push people to high grounds. A hurricane would have people stay in place. I have a friend from American Somoa. She told me that they would open the windows and doors when a hurricane came through. That way the wind could pass straight through the house without busting up the windows. I should track her down and give her a call.

But, with a fire, you end up with people running away from the fire. In whatever direction they can. And some had to jump into the ocean. Fortunately, they were rescued.

Some of my readers live in forest type communities. Do you have a “bug out” bag ready to go? A rally point? Secondary communication?

Some of my readers live in “Earthquake Land.” Do you have a “bug out” bag? A rally point? Secondary means of communication?

I might have a reader that has moved to a location nicknamed “Tornado Alley.” Same questions: bug out bag; rally point; secondary communication? Your mother will want to know.

Also, understand that emergency services could easily become overwhelmed. Just look at Maui. The fire broke out last night. The hospitals are already overwhelmed with victims having all kinds of injuries related to the fire.

Our precious planet Earth, once in a while, likes to remind us just how powerful she is. Sometimes, she throws a little fit and some natural disaster blows up. Without a plan, the thing just gets worse. With a plan, and it doesn’t need to be complicated, you and your loved ones have a shot to make it…to the next one!

I’m just saying

That’s it for today. Be the person a stranger will do CPR on. Check in on each other and remember you cannot remember you forgot something until you remember…YOU FORGOT! BWA…wait…what?

Peace
