The “Third Wheel” of an NFL game date.
Non-tackling, overpaid, and lippy (at times) when they shouldn’t be.
Case in point is the kicker for Kansas City, Harrison Butker.
He is facing (rightfully) the full backlash from society about his comments given during a speech to the graduating class of 2024 at Benedictine College in Kansas City.
I’ve sat through and watched recordings of many of these type speeches. Why? Cause I’m a nerd like that.
I like to hear what folks that get invited to such events have to say. Of course, with an NFL kicker, I probably wouldn’t have wasted the time. Why? Because it’s a kicker…duh. What could they possibly have to say that is of any consequence?
Butker took the opportunity to make a bunch of controversial statements about Biden, Catholics, women, and pretty much any hot button issue of the day. Why? Because he was given the opportunity.
I’ve only started to read the speech. When it comes to these speeches, couple things to understand. First, the university usually reads them prior to the person giving them. Usually a few months prior so that, if they don’t like what the person has to say, they can find a better speaker.
Second, Butker, as a representative of the Kansas City Chiefs, I am pretty sure has a contractual obligation to NOT put the Chiefs or the NFL in a negative light. The Chiefs also have an obligation to not cast a negative light on the NFL as well. That means the Chiefs and the NFL probably want to know what kind of statements the players are making when given a public speaking spot.
After all, a university would want a speaker to spout off with “Don’t come to this university” and the NFL/Chiefs wouldn’t want a player spouting off about whatever grievance they have against the organization. Make sense?
All of that means SOMEONE read the speech BEFORE that kicker opened his mouth on that microphone!
If you read the speech, it will take you only a light skim of the 4th paragraph to go: NOPE! That speech is NOT going forward. No matter where you are on the political spectrum.
However, they did not. And now, they (the university, NFL, and Chiefs) ALL have a big PR problem. The problem being they allowed a person to puke out statements that pissed off a bunch of people. Especially women.
My prediction on this: He’s a kicker. I will bet you a bunch of money that someone is going to take a 15 yard penalty for unnecessary roughness and personal foul for a huge hit on him. It might even be career ending. Further, if he misses another 39 yard field goal, he will be looking for a new team…that will NEVER come!
