June 7, 1944.
Ever hear of it?
How about December 8, 1941?
Those are the “day afters.”
The following days after D-Day (80 years ago yesterday) and Pearl Harbor (will be 83 years ago).
It’s those days when the survivors watch the sun come up and say “what the f&*k just happened?”
It’s when the guys on Normandie could look back toward the English Channel and the beach and see just how far they managed to get. The day gets kinda glossed over. Sort of like there was D-Day and then the Germans surrendered.
D-Day was just the START.
There were another 12 WEEKS of hard fighting to get to Paris. It wasn’t until August 25th, that the allies managed to liberate Paris. That, my friends, is a LOT of “bodies for real estate.” On both sides.
Eisenhower had his letter of resignation already drafted up before the troops hit the beach. He was fully ready to quit because he had a lot of doubt that the invasion would actually work. And there was a lot of doubt among the Allied commanders that this would work.
Lots of firsts to have happen that go round. Plenty of unknowns. What they did know for certain was the ratios. That is the ratio of soldiers it would take to dislodge a “dug in” foe. Not just “dug in” but fortified.
See, the research goes like this: it takes 3 “Joes” to take 1 “dug in Joe.” And that only works 75% of the time.
Think about that. Three to one and only successful 75% of the time.
That means, if you knew that number at the time, you would be on a landing craft with two of your buddies. You would look left and right and realize that there is a good possibility only one of you will survive the first dug in position. Then, if you were penciling out the numbers, you would need to find two more friends for the next one. And so on and so forth until you reached D-DAY +1. That is the day after when, if everything went good, you might get re-enforced with new friends.
So, when you see that “old timer” from the “Greatest Generation” keep make sure to shake their hand especially if they have one of those military unit baseball hats. Give them a pat on the back. They did quite a bit on D-DAY and on D-DAY +1. They might be a bit tired having hiked from Omaha Beach to Paris (183 miles).
I’m just saying
That’s it for today. Be the person your dog thinks you are. Check in on each other and remember you are NOT being honest…LYING IN BED!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHHAAHA…hmmmm
Peace
