Ed-vise: Mohs Surgery

A my head hurts GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, got a bit of Mohs done…cause I had nothing better to do with my time!

Free For All Friday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s FRIDAY! NO OPEN MAT; BUT PIZZA NIGHT!

Yup, got some Mohs surgery done yesterday. Not so much that I had nothing better to do with my time and more so that the issues I created long ago and passed on to Future Ed…those consequences came due.

I have a few spots on my dome that are Italian Cancers of the Skin. They are called Basal Cell Carcinoma. But I think “Italian Cancer” is better.

They are localized. However, there are three that will get removed. First one was yesterday.

It goes like this. They sit you in this cool chair that moves in all kinds of different directions but not inverted. My doctor was short while the nurse was tall. Which made for free rides up and down so the two could do their thing.

They flipped me back horizontal and raised me up. Then, the nurse scrubbed the area with some betadine and injected some lidocaine into my scalp. The first one stung. The ones after that…nothing.

Doc comes in and breaks out the scrapping/scalpel tool. Kept asking if I felt anything and I said “nope.” The thing that was odd was I could hear the cutting. Really. I learned that sound travels very well across the bones of the skull. Which is why I could hear the scrapping and the cutting. It was kinda eerie.

Once they cut enough, they propped me up and put a bandage on the hole they removed from my scalp. They took the sample to their lab (in house) and I waited. And waited. And waited for like an hour or so. They came back and said we need some more.

They sat me down again, tilted me back again, and injected lidocaine again. This time, they needed more lidocaine than before. Apparently us “Gingers” metabolize that stuff pretty quickly and efficiently. It’s like candy to us. Again, I learned something new.

They scrapped some more. Doc asked if I could feel anything and I said “YES!” Yuppers, that second go round DEFINITELY hurt. More lidocaine.

Oh, I forgot, before the bandage to plug the whole, they cauterize stuff. Probably capillaries. That stinks. Probably because of burning hair (yes, I do have some up there).

Bandage and waiting.

Came back with an all clear! Then came the stitching with more lidocaine.

They pulled parts of the skin on my scalp together to sew it up. When they do that, I could feel the skin on my head getting tighter and tighter. You might think this would take care of any wrinkles. Apparently it is fewer than you think.

Stitched it up. Put some bandages on my head, scheduled the removal and round two for two weeks out, and sent me home.

Just like that. Too easy.

Problem is once all the lidocaine wore off, the pain set in. I bumped the stitches once and that sent a bit of lightning through the whole of my head. It still throbs and it did leak last night. Not a bloody mess but enough to make Newbie laugh at me. No Mercy!

Do your future self a favor: wear sunscreen. Especially if you are a Ginger. The Future You will appreciate it.

I’m just saying

That’s it for today. Be the person your dog thinks you are. Check in on each other and remember psychics wear…PARANORMAL PANTS! BWAHAHAHAHAHHA…spooky!

Peace
