A cat fight on the front porch GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, cats going at it this morning on my front porch had me run them both off! Not a fan of cats. Or maybe just their owners who let them run all over the place at night.
Technically Talkin Tuesday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s TUESDAY…technically speaking!
Scientists suck at talking to people.
As you all know, I listen to Lex Fridman’s podcast. Side bar: although Spousal Support Unit believes he has a boring voice, he does have an amazing idea on a podcast. Getting to “Why” people do what they do. BOTH sides of an argument. Highly recommended.
Lex brought up another great point: scientists are terrible at talking to people.
To add insult to injury, they then do presentations at seminars filled with scientists that have similar biases and are also terrible at talking to people.
Did you ever wonder why the “anti-vax” people managed to gain so much following?
They are good at talking to people. At conversing. At taking really complex things and breaking it down into understandable and easy to digest stuff. Like Joe Rogan. Rogan is really good at talking to people. He practices the art (it is an art) all the time. He will even bring on scientists to his show and help them get their message out in a way the average person can understand it.
If you go to college and earn a degree in science, more likely than not you did not take a class in how to talk with people who are non-scientists. Heaven forbid you earn a PhD. You DEFINITELY did not take a class in how to speak to “Lay People.” To make matters worse though, you presented your information to other people who did not take a class in “Speaking to the Masses.” Those people praised your work and defense of your thesis (needed for a PhD) and bestowed on you a Doctorate Degree.
When people do not understand the science or technology, they end up fearing it. Bitcoin and other crypto currencies are facing this situation now. The President issued an executive order about the stuff. The EU recently voted down legislation that would have significantly impacted the crypto world in a negative way. Voted down by 32 – 24. Those 24 will keep the topic on the table.
My Ed-vise to the universities: teach scientists how to talk to people…nicely. You will have much better results.
I’m just saying
That’s it for today. Take care of yourselves. Check in on each other and remember before the crowbar…CROWS DRANK AT HOME! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Peace
