Ed-vise: John Locke

A chilly forward ambulation GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, it’s getting chilly! This morning’s meditative walk had the hands feeling a bit of the cold. Had to extend and flex them a bit to get the blood going through them. Winter is coming!

Think About it Thursday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s THURSDAY! Time to THINK!

John Locke.

Ever hear of him? Of course you have! Well, maybe not directly but you and I both are touched by his thinking beings that we are most likely Good Ol’ ‘Muricans!

Locke was a philosopher. At least that is what he is known for. He influenced many if not all of the Founding Documents and leaders of ‘Murica. The Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Constitution all bear his thinking on government and human rights.

Well, not all humans. Just the white ones.

One little nugget of history that doesn’t get talked about very much is the fact that he was very much invested and benefited from a company called The Royal African Company. During his time with the company he dealt heavily with (drum roll)…TRADING SLAVES!

Yup, the guy that has so much influence on our early (and current) government structure and concepts was an active slave trader.

His justification of Africans being slaves was that they were heathens and savages. The cure: convert them to Christianity and educate them.

His ideas of slavery didn’t stop there. Oh no. See, back in the day, if you owed a debt you could not repay on time, you became an indentured servant. In today’s terms, if you had a crushing amount of student loan debt, you would be sold for the amount of that debt, and made a slave to the person that paid your debt. Pretty cool! You could take your highly educated self and dig ditches, or pick cotton and tobacco.

Well, if you were in such a state, you were NOT considered human. Nope. You were considered PROPERTY! Just like a cow. If you happened to have a child during your slave tenure, guess who that child belonged to. The owner…not the parent. Remember, you were property, like a cow. If a cow gives birth, the owner of that cow is the owner of the calf. If the cow runs off, the owner still owns the calf.

And Locke LOVED that idea.

So, Think About It. The guy who believed in life and liberty…yeah…not so much for everybody. Just the boys and investors of the Royal African Company.

I’m just saying

That’s it for today. Take care of yourselves. Check in on each other and remember 10am and 12am both come before 11am! Hmmmm….think about that!
