Ed-vise Episode 161

A quarter moon GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Hershey Walk this morning showed the top quarter of the moon. Very cool to see.

Today’s bit o trivia: Battle of Matewan. Huh? Yup…Matewan. See, in 1920s, coal miners were at literal war with the coal companies over basic rights. Coal companies ran the show and treated the miners like almost slaves. The miners ended up relying almost entirely on their jobs to live and the companies knew it. Being fired meant being kicked off company land which was usually the town you lived in. Well, the police chief of Matewan (a Hatfield) didn’t like that and met the “detectives” assigned to evict, at the station. Before killing 7 of the 10 detectives, the chief (Sid Hatfield) shot the mayor. Twelve days later he married the mayor’s wife. Hmmm

Anyway…

What Would You Do Wednesday Ed-vise today. I do love Wednesdays! Because there is so many options.

Flight safety today.

The acts of violence on planes is at an all time high these days. Recently a Southwest flight attendant was punched in the mouth by a passenger who took issue with “House Rules.”

If you haven’t seen the video, you can touch any of the news webpages and watch it. One witness says that the steward was the instigator. I disagree.

Reason being it is a plane flying. The passenger was given an instruction and refused to follow it. The instruction related to the position of the passenger’s mask and the table not being in the upright position. Seems trivial. However, it is “House Rules.”

As a potential passenger, put yourself in any of the seats surrounding the situation. Ask yourself what you would do in that situation. Could you de-escalate the situation? Would you move to protect someone, yourself? Would you record the situation?

As a flight attendant I will recommend a couple things.

First, if you have to engage a person in that manner, a second attendant needs to assist.

Second (this is a training thing), know where you are standing in relation to a potential attacker. The attendant was bent over into the assailant. Bad body position. Further, the potential of that person hitting with more than a fist is VERY real. So, realize that. It could easily have been worse. I’m just saying because I am on your side.

That’s it for today. Take care of yourselves. Check in on each other and remember jokes about unemployed people really don’t work. Read the room.

Peace
