Yesterday I made a controversial statement. It went along the lines of we are who we are because of our past. It was in context of racism and legislation that attempts to ignore the history of Good Ol ‘Merica.
When most people read that, in particular Republicans, they immediately have a negative sentiment. They feel like I am attacking them on a personal level. I also see it in the interviews conducted with “representatives” and talking heads.
The statement is 100% true. It is a fact.
We are who we are and act how we act and believe how we believe BECAUSE of our past history. If you have a belief that slavery never happened, it is because of your past history. The history taught to you by your prior teachers and ancestors. If you have a belief that slavery was an integral part of creating ‘Merica, it is BECAUSE of your past history. Your past teachers and ancestors. We are by -products of the previous generations much like our children are by-products of us.
Ignoring history or attempting to gloss over it as (in the words of the Texas senate) an anomaly minimizes the mistakes made. And the best teaching moments are when we make mistakes. We become so much better when we look at our mistakes and analyze what happened that created that mistake. In addition, HOW DO WE NOT HAVE IT HAPPEN AGAIN!
Teach what is ‘SO.” What is “SO” is the fact that Good Ol’ ‘Merica was built on the backs of slaves. FACT, FACT, FACT. Now let’s learn from it!
