What Would You Do Wednesday Ed-vise today. Cause I LOVE WEDNESDAY!
Why do people stay in abusive work environments? Because they don’t have an exit strategy.
Blizzard is a company that owns Activision. They make video games. Have for years. They had a VP whose office had the nickname of “The Cosby Suite.” Now, the company faces millions in lawsuits for sexual harassment. One claim is that a former employee committed suicide on a business trip. She was accompanied by her manager who had brought along a bunch of sex toys thinking he would use them on her.
Employees stayed with the company for a while being harassed. Why? No strategy.
What Would You do if or when your company culture turns toxic? I’ll give you some Ed-vise.
First, the bigger the company the less loyal to you they are. Loyalty is earned and you must treasure yours.
Second, companies will take from you all you are willing to give and then get rid of you. It’s true. Once people became “Resources,” and Human Resources became a department, you, we, became a number on a page. Thank Jack Welch for that. So don’t think you need to sacrifice your personal well-being to the company bottom line. You already have given them your sweat equity…that’s good enough.
Third is probably the most important part needed on an exit strategy. Reason being is you have to calculate how long it will take you to find another replacement income. With that in mind, ALWAYS BE LOOKING! My dad told me that. Never get comfortable in your position. Always be looking for the next opportunity. Another employer, another business, a side-hustle, whatever. ALWAYS BE LOOKING. It’s perfectly fine to do so. A company will get rid of you at the drop of a hat! You’ve seen it happen. So don’t feel like you cannot get rid of your company just as fast.
I’m just saying
