I had a great conversation the other day with a friend of mine. Of course, it was around Afghanistan. It was along the lines of why the Afghans basically rolled over for the Taliban.
Last week I came across that article from SIGAR that had in the title Doing the Wrong Thing Perfectly. Great title.
We spent many years telling the Afghan people how bad the Taliban were. Showed all kinds of evidence and supporting proof that the Taliban were bad. We told them how awful they were and how modern they could be by doing what we told them to do.
We offered standards of living and all kinds of things to help them. “We will help you” stated all the aid agencies and global community. And everyone stormed in with good will and charity and away they went.
I have to wonder, if we ever ASKED them what THEY wanted. We TOLD them the Taliban were bad. Did we ask the Afghan people if THEY thought the Taliban was bad? I mean, after 9/11, we started bombing that country within days. Then we rolled in and took over the place. Started pumping tons of money in and away we went. Installed voting democracy in a country that really had NEVER known what democracy was.
Did we ever think that maybe, just maybe, the Afghans didn’t want what we were telling them they wanted? Look at Game of Thrones. When Daenerys Targaryen freed the slaves, did she ask them if they wanted to be free? Nope. And many of them wanted to remain captives.
The whole world does not want democracy. We become the Officious Intermeddler when we think it does.
I’m just saying
