I read Simon Sinek’s book “Start with Why.”
I also watched his Ted Talk on the same thing.
The book and the talk focus on companies like Apple. Where there is something of a cult like following for a product or service. Add to that, the employees have a similar fetish for making the product or providing said service.
In reading and watching about the “Why” thing, I began to wonder about what I call a “dark side of Why.” Basically it explores “Why” some companies make things that are inherently bad for people. In addition, “Why” do evil dictators surface from time to time in history.
The other day, in my consulting class, we talked about what an “Inclusive” leader sounds like. The things they say to make people feel included. The conversation was based on a Harvard Business Review article. Not a bad read. It did make me think…of course.
I won’t go into the detail about how the inclusive leader sounds. What I did ask is “would a person follow these inclusive sounding leaders?” Further, would the people be willing to follow said inclusive sounding leader, no matter what? In essence, would they put their lives at risk?
Many, if not all, injustices in history have a “Cult of Personality” that managed to “lead” a bunch of people to commit the wrong(s). Those who did commit the wrong probably felt that the Cult of Personality Individual, was an “inclusive” sounding leader.
And when that inclusive sounding Cult of Personality leader convinces people of his “Why,” then bad things start to happen.
Why do bad people rise to the top? Same reason good people do. By making enough people feel included.
