Monday Musings Ed-vise today. Cause it’s MONDAY! So GET AFTER IT!
Read an article this morning from UK Intelligence. No, it was not written by James Bond. Of course, we NEVER saw him write anything really.
Anyway
The report stated that the combat power of Russia sent into Ukraine has been rendered 25% combat ineffective. That means that 1/4th of the entire combat power sent into Ukraine has been killed or destroyed. 25%.
For an invading army, that is A LOT! That is a lot of money, people, and equipment. Then, to add insult to injury, Russia just lost several high ranking personnel, including at least one general in an attack that killed over 100 senior officers.
THAT type of loss, my friends, is what you would call “INCOMPETENCE.” Having that many senior officers literally standing on the front lines of combat.
Yet Russia has a history of losing a bunch of people when it comes to war.
In WW1, Russia mobilized 12,000,000 people. They lost 9 million. WW2 saw 8 to 10 million.
For this little war with it’s neighbor, Russia has already lost between 20,000 and 40,000 since the start in late February.
I recall my military training was always about Soviet (Russian) doctrine. How to counter it. Growing up we were ALWAYS wary of the Russians. We would literally do drills in elementary school about reacting to nuclear war. It was crazy times. Tom Clancy wrote several books about us having to deal with the Soviet Union in war times. These were actually very well written books. Some made into movies.
Then, the Soviet Union was an intimidating force. Today, it doesn’t really seem that way.
Perhaps they rested on their reputation. Looking back, they really never developed a reputation. The only real threat that they posed was their ability to deliver nuclear bombs onto US soil. Looking back, that was really it. They never went head to head with anyone. They never did much other than spy on us just like we did with them. They made a great nemesis when it came to the Olympics. I mean, HELL, they lost like 14,000 troops in Afghanistan.
Based on the performance so far of the Russians, you can safely tell your drinking buddies that they have performed POORLY! But, that does not mean anyone should take the foot off the gas. Russia, despite losing a bunch of people and equipment has ALWAYS seemed to come back. So, to my Ukrainian readers: DON’T GET COCKY!
