Ed-vise: Public Speaking

A back from the farm GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, wen to the farm this weekend for my cousin’s graduation BBQ. Great time seeing family and…I bought a bandsaw!

Monday Musings Ed-vise today. Cause it’s MONDAY! So GET AFTER IT!

Gonna be hard on teachers this morning. Apologies in advance.

Met up with my Jackass Cousin this weekend.

As you all know his son graduated this past weekend. Turns out everyone received a last minute invitation to the event (that almost didn’t happen). Why? Because my Cousin is a Jackass. Plain and simple.

His son, despite all the problems he suffered, actually earned Salutatorian status! That is actually quite amazing. That level of academic excellence is almost at Valedictorian level. Valedictorian having the highest GPA; Salutatorian is second highest.

Both the Valedictorian and Salutatorian give a speech to the graduating class. It is tradition…unless you’re my Jackass Cousin’s son.

And this is where I become critical of teachers.

The general statistic is that people have a strong fear of public speaking. Apparently this has been going on for centuries. Quite frankly I think it is bullshit.

If EVERYONE has a fear of public speaking, then NOBODY should make fun of ANYONE that does so! I think the term is called “Herd Immunity.”

Teachers, I think, are doing TOO LITTLE, with eliminating this unfounded fear of public speaking! And, my Jackass Cousin only caudles the fear his son has but supporting it and bragging about how his son said “I’m NOT SPEAKING!”

If teachers are going to teach anything that WILL make the world a better place it is public speaking! Teach the kids to get over that irrational fear, stand up in front of your peers, and SPEAK!

I’ve been afraid to speak in public. At least in a formal type setting. I was ALWAYS a cut up in class. “Class Clown” I believe is the term. There were lots of us opening our mouths and speaking out of turn. Happened all the time. When the teacher said “Ed, get up here and give a speech,” TOTALLY different story! But, I did it! And I kept doing it! And I do it all the time when given an opportunity!

What I realized is that I LOVE IT! That the fear is COMPLETELY IRRATIONAL! Nothing is going to happen even if you screw it up.

Teachers need to get on this and get that fear of speaking under control. It’s annoying as hell and would probably help the world on a much bigger scale.

None the less, I am proud of my Jackass Cousin’s son. Well earned status of academic excellence. Too bad you missed a great opportunity to let the world know because you have allowed an unfounded fear to fester in the brain of yours.

I’m just saying

That’s it for today. Take care of yourselves. Check in on each other and remember when a clock is hungry…it goes back…FOUR SECONDS! HAHAHAHAHHAHA…tick, tick, tick, tick!

Peace
