A depressed dog GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, dogs are depressed and moping around the house because Spousal Support Unit is in Seaside for the week. It’s pathetic to see…trust me on that.
Technically Talkin Tuesday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s TUESDAY…Technically!
In history, ‘Murican history that is, we get taught about Columbus, then the Mayflower, then Thanksgiving, and the Revolution. That pretty much sums up the social studies we (at least I) received in high school.
Did you ever wonder how enough people ended up in the colonies to create an army big enough to deal with the British Empire? I mean we are talking around 170 years from the Mayflower to the Revolution.
The folks in history we hear about are the signers of the Declaration, and the “Founding Fathers.” Paul Revere gets some credits, Franklin, Jefferson, but that is not nearly enough to take up arms to defeat the Brits.
I started reading a book called White Trash. It is a history of the first 400 years of ‘Murican migration.
And it brings up a very interesting point of view and historical fact. That is many of us, and I do mean MANY, can probably trace our roots back to what was commonly referred to as “White Trash.”
See, before the Mayflower, there was already Europeans setting up colonies on the east coast. Back in the 1500s and 1600s, Europe had a bit of a problem with poor people. Not everyone can be rich and not everyone knows how to farm or has land to farm. Safe to say there were a LOT of people that were very poor. Much like today’s homeless in Portland…only a whole lot more.
When you are poor, you tend to end up breaking the law. When you have bills to pay and mouths to feed and no money, you tend to do what you must…no matter what. So, the prisons end up getting full.
One of the things European Royalty, at that time liked to do was have wars. That would drive down population because they could draft all those poor into service. However, that started to become too costly. Plus, once the war was over, those poor that were drafted, they now know how to fight and they tended to become a violent little lot. Many became pirates.
In that time, the poor, homeless, and prison types, well they were often referred to as “Refuse.” Which is another name for “Trash.”
Enter the Haklyuts. Richard in particular.
Big advocate of colonizing the Americas. How, by shipping the poor over to the colonies to scratch out the new frontier and provide the back breaking labor to the folks who were given massive tracks of land for their loyalty to the crown.
Technically Speaking these folks coming out of prisons and slums were basically indentured servants that owed money. Many of them did not come to the colonies because they had a hope and a dream. They came because they were FORCED to. “Offered” a way out via a “loan” that they could work off in the colonies…all the way to their death. Basically like a student loan (ohhh that’s good!).
So, when you trace your family tree back to wherever, don’t look for it to go back to some king or queen, it probably goes back to some homeless person who was a forced servant to a landowner.
I’m just saying
That’s it for today. Take care of yourselves. Check in on each other and remember if you go to a zoo that has only one animal, it is a…SHIHT-ZU! HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA…get it?
