I think Congress reads my blog! Seriously!
Remember how I tell you all the time that judges do not protect your rights? That if you want your rights protected you have to get laws passed that do protect them.
Well, the Senate is about to pass the Respect of Marriage bill. That bill will get rid of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that Bill Clinton signed into law which defined marriage the way the so called “Christian Church” wanted it defined (between a man and woman). DOMA also allowed states to not recognize same sex marriages. The Supreme Court under the case of Obergerfell basically said that was unconstitutional and then made same sex marriages the “law of the land.” That was a poor decision primarily because it is NOT in the Supreme Court’s lane to make such laws.
Now, understand something. This Defense of Marriage Act MUST happen quickly. Reason being is the part getting rid of DOMA and recognizing same sex marriages is an amendment to the initial Defense of Marriage Act that was passed by the current House back in July. The new House will get sworn in January 3, 2023. If you watched the elections, the conservative Republicans will have control of the House at that time. Which probably means they will NOT allow this to go forward once they have the reins of power.
Why? Because, in my opinion, the Republican Party has become downright MEAN as of late.
So, Think About It. If the current Congress does not move this along quickly, and the new Congress gets sworn in, then NO Respect for Marriage Act. Then, the Supreme Court will probably take up Obergerfell and overturn it. Then, you can track the states that will NOT recognize same sex marriage. They are the same ones that ban women making up their own minds.
