Barry Goldwater.
Ever hear of him? Remember who he was? Of course he’s dead now.
He came around as part of the “Greatest Generation.” Those who fought in WW2. He lost the 1964 Presidential Election to LBJ after LBJ did a commercial where it painted Goldwater in the light of starting a nuclear war and ending all of humanity. I thought it an amazing commercial for the time that really impacted a lot of voters.
I started looking into Goldwater last night as I came across another school district that hates the demon of Critical Race Theory so much that they banned it despite the fact it wasn’t even taught in their school district. Like all the other school districts that have banned it despite not teaching it in the first place.
The district quoted the definition of CRT that was based on what the Goldwater Institute put forward.
Here’s the thing though. Based on what I know of Barry Goldwater, he would have WANTED the discussion of CRT to happen.
Goldwater was a big time DE-SEGREGATIONIST! Big time! Also a member of the NAACP. You believe that. A white guy in the 60s as a member of the NAACP. He voted for civil rights but he voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act because he wanted to leave it to the states to figure it out and not the feds. His one big mistake.
Otherwise, he was very much against the policies that were used to marginalize people of color. Republicans back then really did care about the integration of ALL people into the fabric of Good Ol’ ‘Murica.
He was also pro-choice. In his last term of office he voted consistently against the conservative religious movements that were festering up.
See, he saw a real problem coming from the “Religious Right.” Unfortunately, his dire warnings were not headed and, NOW, you have a political party under the name of “Republican” that is just plain mean.
“Mark my word” he said back in 1994 “if and when these preachers get control of the party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.”
He saw a problem on the horizon and was ignored as the angry old man shaking his fist at the other drivers. Too bad. Because the current “Republican” party could sure use the help.
