Over the weekend marked the 38th year since the worst chemical leak ever.
The facility leaked around 45 tons of methyl isocyanate. It’s a chemical used in bug spray.
Happened at night over there but in the morning here on the West Coast.
A company run by a guy named Warren Anderson leaked the stuff. Caused some 550,000 injuries with 38,000 partial injuries and 3900 severe or disabling injuries. 8,000 died within two weeks and another 8,000 have since died from the gas leak.
That was what the government of India reported. Not everyone was accounted for so the numbers are probably higher.
This was the result of the Bhopal India Catastrophe. A huge industrial accident.
What had me Musing you ask. Warren Anderson who was the CEO of Union Carbide at the time.
India courts had convicted him of murder in absentia. They did so because he was a US citizen. So he stayed in the US and Good Ol’ ‘Murica protected him and would not allow deportation. In fact, he was present in India at the time. The police arrested him and put him under house arrest. Then, mysteriously, he boarded a private jet and headed back to the US.
The impact to Union Carbide? Well, that is just a corrupt tale of backdoor sales through shell companies. After all, customers need their bug spray and stock holders need their stocks to make money.
The negotiated settlement was around $450 million. Union Carbide paid that like it was change in their sofas.
I tell ya…we don’t have to worry about being hit by an asteroid. We will take care of our own destruction…thank you very much!
