Ed-vise: Human Resources

A forgot my phone GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, forgot the phone this time. Circled back and picked it up but GEEEZ! Phones and keys need to do a better job of reminding people to pick them up!

What Would You Do Wednesday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s WEDNESDAY! And I do love WEDNESDAYS!

Another shooting. This time at a bank.

This time it was another Workplace Violence issue.

Shooter walked into the bank with an AR-15. Walked into the staff meeting and started shooting. He shot the staff meeting up before the bank opened for business.

Apparently, he had only been working there a few weeks before they were going to fire him. Furthermore, he bought the AR legally.

Young guy who just graduated from college and was looking forward to his future.

This one is going to be a bit critical of businesses. In particular to their hiring practices and why so many businesses simply…SUCK!

Many states are what they call “At Will” employment. Meaning that you can walk away from the business and the business can walk away from you. The logic behind such a thing has to do with fairness. In my opinion, it’s a dumb fallacy. Plus, it puts businesses in position to simply fire people whenever the numbers don’t add up. That’s why employees are no longer “People.” They are a “Resource.” Hence…Human Resources. Easiest way to make your profit numbers…get rid of resources. Easiest resource to get rid of…Humans.

In one of my past lives, I worked for a company that brought people in. Then, brought in a new boss who then got rid of all those people that were brought in. Several of those people had turned down other job offers to come work for that company. Many had changed their lifestyle due to the overseas nature of the work. Didn’t matter. They were gone.

People identify themselves with their jobs. With their companies. It becomes who they are. Don’t believe me? When you meet someone new, what is the first thing you ask? “What do you do for a living?” The majority of the time, people will tell you their job title and the company they work for.

When the company decides to get rid of people, they are basically stripping those people of their identities. Most people, know how to cope and deal with the situation. Most will get pissed on the drive home, re-invent themselves on that same drive, and most will find another job.

Some, just a few, do NOT have the coping skills. Those few will believe they have lost everything they are. When they reach that level, they will punish themselves or they will punish others. When they go to punish others, they will look to take back what was taken from them in whatever manner they can think of.

Is it the companies responsibility to make sure the ex-employee is OK? No. There is no legal reason for a company in an “At Will” or any other type employment state to ensure the mental wellbeing of an employee. None.

Should they? Absolutely.

If they don’t, well, they can have the cleaning company phone number on speed dial for when their Arrogance Bill comes due.

Some Ed-vise for you: be nice to your employees. Treat them like people deserving of respect. Not as a “Resource.”

I’m just saying

That’s it for today. Be the person a stranger will do CPR on. Check in on each other and remember gas stations charge to fill your tires because of…INFLATION! BWAHAHAHAHAHA…Good ONE!

Peace
