Did you know there is a Donut Worker’s Union? I didn’t. Just recently learned about it.
There is a donut shop that started here in Portland. Recently it fired a few employees.
A bit of background.
A couple weeks ago Portland and the rest of Oregon enjoyed some boiling hot temps. The donut shop apparently got very hot inside with the ovens and body heat making the place rise in temperature.
Some of the employees believed it had become an unsafe condition and walked out. Now, those employees have been fired for not adhering to their schedules.
I don’t have inside knowledge of what happened. Only press reports. Hopefully, the donut shop spoke with legal about the legal aspects of firing a whistle blower who may have “Stop Work Authority.” That is they can stop work when there is an unsafe condition.
That aside, it’s the optics of the situation. Pretty sure the donut industry is not a high paying job. So firing an employee that brings a safety concern to your attention and then trying to justify it by saying “Oh, They didn’t keep to the schedule.” Come on Man!!! You say you’re passionate about your employees. THEN ACT LIKE IT! Image is everything
