Ed-vise Episode 303

A finally got to walk GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, snow let up so was able to do a little Forward Ambulation. Allows some time to enjoy the quiet of a winter morning!

What Would You Do Wednesday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s WEDNESDAY! And I do love WEDNESDAY!

If something is “Common Sense” then EVERYONE would know it.

When it comes to personal safety, security, and self-defense, the necessary actions to take are not Common Sense. You might have the answer to a situation; I might have a solution to avoid a bad outcome. That’s you and I looking back on a problem that occurred. That’s called “Hind Sight.” It is NOT Common Sense.

So, here is the scenario: you are walking down the streets of Portland. Perhaps pushing a stroller while your other kid walks beside you. You pass by a person who starts to follow you.

Do you have a problem?

Probably not. Most people end up following most people at some point in their life. The majority of the 6 billion people on the planet end up followed by someone at some point in time. The majority of people in the world DO NOT want to hurt anyone. They just want to go wherever it is they want to go.

Once in a while, someone with bad intentions finds someone they believe will be an easy target. Case in point a woman in Portland was recently followed and confronted by a man in her apartment. She was not injured nor were her children. Later, that man attempted to kidnap a small child from another person in an elevator.

If someone is following you, at what point do you have a problem? How would you know someone has bad intentions toward you?

First, pay attention to the little hairs on your neck. If those start to stand up, that is your first alarm to say “GET READY!” Do not ignore them.

Next, realize that if you quick step to your home, now the person following you knows where you live. So, rely on the natural tendency of humans to “Forget” or “Get Lost.”

WHAT?!?

What do you do when you forgot something at the office or car? You stop in your tracks, turn around and go back. SO, do that. Go to a place with lots of people. Witnesses. Stop suddenly. Then, turn around and go back the way you came. If someone is following you, then you will know.

To make even more certain, do a series of turns. If the person keeps on your tail, you know you are being followed.

So now what?

Seek help! Open your damn mouth and ask someone for help. Or, better yet, if you are in Portland, there are a million coffee shops all over the place. Duck into one. If the follower comes in, now you can make a scene. If it’s a Starbucks, there will always be someone there to help. After all, they do train for Angry Customer Scenarios.

Whatever you do, going straight back to your home will only lead the follower directly to you.

I’m just saying

That’s it for today. Take care of yourselves. Check in on each other and remember a can opener that does not work is called a… CAN’T OPENER! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA…get it?

Peace
