A cold Forward Ambulation GOOD MORNING!!! to you all! Yup, cold this morning. I used to live in Alaska where it would get plenty cold. Cold is relative. Doesn’t matter where you live so bragging about -20 temps…that’s just showing off.
Monday Musings Ed-vise today. Cause it’s MONDAY! So GET AFTER IT!
Robert Heinlein was a sci-fi writer. He wrote lots of stuff that was ahead of it’s time which included the story for quite possibly the BEST MOVIE EVER: STARSHIP TROOPER! And I do mean BEST…MOVIE…EVER! I do not know what the academy awards looks for in movies but THAT had it all! But I digress…
He has a quote that caught my eye and Musings. It says: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give order, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
At first glance I rolled my eyes and thought “psycho.” But, then I read it again. I noticed a couple things that I will share.
First, Heinlein does not say “You must have done or attempted these things.” Nope. I just have to be ABLE to. What a relief!
Second, I had to count how many I can do. There are 21 things. Of those 21 I can or have done 18. Not bad. Not too bad at all!
I cannot “Conn a Ship.” That means to control it. Drive it, steer it, navigate it, whatever sailors say and do. I have a co-worker who probably can. She took sailing lessons. Me? Nope.
I cannot write a sonnet. A sonnet is a 14 line poem. Nope! No sonnet here!
I don’t know if I will “die gallantly.” It would be nice. Might happen. In my opinion, I think this one a bit unfair. I believe it should be “live gallantly” rather than to die that way. It’s far more productive to “live gallantly.”
The rest I can do or have done. Some might disagree with my ability. Especially the “fight efficiently” when it comes to my fellow Jiu Jitsu friends. But, I think I could do em.
What about you? How many could you do? I bet more than you think.
I’m just saying
That’s it for today. Take care of yourselves. Check in on each other and remember today begins Diarrhea Awareness. It runs all week! Wait for it…wait for it…HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHA
Peace
