Technically Talking Tuesday Ed-vise today. Cause it’s TUESDAY…Technically!
I’ve been paying a bit of attention to the World Cup Tournament. More so just because it’s a sporting event with global significance. Plus, I just like good competition.
Way back in 2010 the decision was made for Qatar to host the World Cup for 2022.
FIFA (the governing body of World Cup Soccer) made the decision. And the rest of the world gasped. Collectively.
I recall when the announcement was made. Plus, I recall my thoughts at the time: Da FUCK!?!?! Of course, if you are any type of “Thinker” as I am, it would be safe to say SOMEONE WAS PAID!
And you’d be right.
See, normally, the World Cup is held in the summer months. When it is like 8 Billion degrees Fahrenheit on the Saudi Peninsula. That is where Qatar is located. Soccer (or futbol for my international readers) is normally played outdoors. So, that’s the initial problem. Second, World Cup has A LOT of drinking that occurs. Qatar is NOT a drinking country. Very conservative Muslim. Bans alcohol. Anheuser Busch/InBev has a big role in sponsoring the World Cup. They sell beer. Lots of it. Not the best beer but plenty of it.
Add to those fundamental questions was the infrastructure. Qatar did not have the facilities AT ALL! Hotels, restaurants, stadiums, transportation, none of it.
But, somehow, FIFA agreed with Qatar when Qatar said “No Problem.”
So, given a bunch of desert land and a shit ton of money, BAM, 7 new stadiums along with 100 plus hotels and a 2600 cabin complex were built. Airport expanded. “If you build it they will come” said the ghost in Field of Dreams.
The 7 stadiums are all AC pumped for comfort. They all seat about 60,000 fans. Do you think ANY citizen of Qatar got their hands dirty building those things in 125 degree fahrenheit temperatures? HELL NO! They used modern day slaves out of India, Pakistan, and Nepal. Paid them crap, housed them like animals, killed a bunch of them, and then kicked them out of the country.
After the tournament comes the next question: What will Qatar do with all that stuff they built? I suppose they can apply for the Olympics. I mean technically talking they do have the infrastructure now.
In the end, FIFA stays a corrupt organization that gives legitimacy to cruel dictators and paints a rosy picture for human rights violations. FIFA loves dictators and dictators love FIFA. And, until the soccer world gets tired of the corruption, FIFA will keep control and keep getting paid.
