Think About it Thursday Ed-vise today. Because it’s THURSDAY! Time to THINK!
When you think of Good Ol’ ‘Murican history, what do you picture?
Do you picture the quaint villages of pilgrims? The “gentleman farmer.” That was the guy who was a doctor, lawyer, soldier, farmer, veterinarian and on and on and on.
Do you picture farms all over the place. “40 acres and a mule” as was put forward by Union General Sherman.
Happy kids; healthy crops; healthy farm animals. All of it. Amber waves of grain.
Yeah
Apparently it wasn’t like that.
Putting aside the slavery topic and the Native American struggle for a minute, just Think About something.
When ‘Murica was getting populated there were a few groups of people coming over from Europe. Yes, you had people with money and know how coming over. Yes, you had people who would set up various stores and support things to sell to those who were being given large (and I do mean LARGE) plots of land to farm.
But, Europe was also using ‘Murica to dump their prisoners. Also, during those days, much like today, Europe…ALL of EUROPE…had a bit of a homeless crisis going on. SO much so that at one point, the homeless in England would crowd into the royal court at Buckingham Palace. Europe “solved” this little issue by sending those homeless folks to ‘Murica.
You were homeless in Europe because you had no land or home. Plus, you had no skills for a job. So, you were sent to the New World…WITH THE SAME NOTHING! You were still homeless and you still had no skills!
Oh…and another thing…NOT EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO FARM! How about that folks! Plus, if you did, a New World is not the same as the Old World when it comes to farming.
The term “Poor White Trash” came about in the early 1800s. It was used to describe the people that showed up for the funeral of Andrew Jackson who was the T-Rump of the day. Minus the fact that Jackson was NOT a Coward Draft Dodger.
The folks lined the street in DC. Looking jaundiced (nutrition disorder), with bloated bellies (nutrition disorder indicating starvation). Unwashed, missing teeth (nutrition issue). No money, no home, nothing but the ability to vote.
A recommended book for the libraries: George Weston’s “Poor Whites of the South.” Written in 1856.
That is an eye opener that will crack the romantic façade of early Good Ol’ ‘Murica!
